The opportunity:

A new opportunity exists for a multi-talented Cloud Software Engineer – Industrial Microgrid Systems to join the team.  

The Candidate Will Have:

A university degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, or a related subject; Alternatively, long-standing professional experience in software engineering Relevant design experience or theoretical knowledge in the following areas:
  • Industrial, utility (or other technical infrastructure) systems monitoring or control
  • An understanding of engineering fundamentals of energy, utility and industrial systems
  • Designing, developing, and executing industrial User Interfaces and Experiences (UI/UX)
  • Software frameworks: Both
    • .NET with C# for Windows Forms GUI developments; Blazor would be a plus.
    • Javascript frameworks (React.JS, Node.JS or Angular.JS) for Web-GUI development
  • Cloud front-end and back-end development, ideally with Amazon Web Service
  • Databases
  • Cloud-based architectures and applications
Other software-tech experience that would be a plus:
  • Agile Software development and DevOps (using Github and JIRA)
  • Fundamentals of utility SCADA
General knowledge and skills:
  • Practical skills to set-up and conduct tests on control system hardware and join large-scale power systems tests together with power systems engineers
  • A hands-on delivery-oriented approach with an ability to problem-solve project issues autonomously and wholistically
  • Flexibility to adapt to new programming languages and tools and an existing codebase
  • Teamwork; reporting to the Head of Software Engineering
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work to challenging deadlines
  • Ability to travel, occasionally for multiple days
  • Ability to navigate a scale-up company environment, i.e. to work with limited support functions and within the framework of developing teams, processes, and resources

By the end of this year, you will have:

Reporting to the Head of SW-Engineering, you will have:
  • Developed a firm understanding of PowerTec’s Microgrid and Battery Energy Storage (BESS) solutions, as well as the PaDECS® control system through peer-to-peer coaching and learning on the job
  • Successfully, timely and compliant with the PowerTec solution concepts and pre-existing versions, carried out the delivery of all aspects related to the PaDECS-Cloud platform interface functional and graphic detail design, including the 'back-end' data handling, architecture design, coding per specification, integration testing, functional verification testing and documentation of:
    • Extensions of to the PaDECS Cloud-application (in Amazon Web Services) for aggregated Microgrid monitoring and control (Front-end only, optionally full-stack)
  • Analysed the existing end-to-end code base in conjunction with the head of SW-Engineering and supported deployments, updates and bug-fixes
  • Created a well-documented, version-controlled repository for joint ongoing development and customer documentation of the delivered software and interfaces
  • Improved the tool landscape, design standards and DevOps process for the PaDECS® product
  • Supported development and site commissioning activities and occasionally travelled to customer’s power systems sites for PowerTec existing and new projects.

A new opportunity exists for a Commissioning Engineer - Power Conversion, Protection and Control to join the team.  

The Employee Has:

  • A university degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering or related engineering science, or long-standing practical experience in power system field services
  • Relevant professional engineering, commissioning or field service experience in:
    • LV Electrical Power Distribution Systems (both primary and secondary systems)
    • 3-phase C&I-scale drives, inverters or generators
    • Protection, multi-function protection relays incl. configuration and programming
    • Fieldbus control of power devices (ideally including Modbus and CANbus)
    • Interfacing to supervisory control, monitoring and communications systems
    • Electrical cabinet auxiliary and environmental monitoring and control system
    • Electrical cabinet or switchboard safety systems
    • PLC programming
  • Ideally, you already have had exposure to:
    • Embedded systems software in high or scripting languages on Linux IPCs or similar
    • DC systems (C&I-scale or utility-scale battery or solar systems)
    • Power generation system dynamics (voltage control, droop, inertia, fault currents etc.)
    • Working in a similar role within the Energy/Electrical Utility, renewables or power generation sector
  • A pragmatic, delivery-oriented approach with a strong ability to problem-solve project issues independently
  • Ability to write complex and concise technical documentation
  • Strong inter-personal skills and an ability to work to challenging deadlines with a small team and international supply partners in innovative projects
  • Confidence in dealing with customer technical staff
  • Outstanding professional conduct and verbal & written communication skills
  • An Australian residency, or suitable valid visa to work in Australia for at least 1 year

By the end of this year, the employee will have:

  • Developed a firm understanding of PowerTec’s end-to-end solutions, from the field devices level to the application software level, through intensive peer-to-peer coaching by the team and learning on the job
  • Successfully and timely
  • Analysed, designed, configured, programmed, tested, adapted and optimised the function, dynamic controls and protections via programs, settings and parameters of multi-function protection relays, advanced 3-phase inverters, battery management units, cabinet environmental devices, and the system-level power management application.
  • Configured, tested and commissioned the fieldbus communication between field devices and the overlaid power control system, and aligned the variables/registers/ frames between the devices and systems
  • Programmed cabinet environmental control and protection systems using a modern scripting language
  • Factory-tested the systems’ electrical, control and communication installation
  • Factory-tested the systems’ complex power management functionality, eliminated errors and optimised dynamic control functions
  • Carried out the field device, power asset and whole system functional, communication, safety and failure scenario factory testing
  • Carried out protection injection testing with a test-specific device
  • Carried out on-site device and integrated power system commissioning and functional optimisation on sites across the Australian east coast states
  • Analysed faults on systems from PowerTec’s installed base for:
    • A tri-generator grid integration
    • A community BESS
    • Multiple Battery Energy Storage Systems for Electrical Vehicle charging station buffering (100kVA-500kVA),
    • Grid stabilisation, energy storage and distributed control systems for one or several off-grid industrial Microgrids (3MVA – 10MVA)
  • Undertaken and documented site-specific protection design for submission to network operators and customers
  • Designed and followed an Inspection and Test Plan (ITP) and delivered structured factory test and site acceptance test reports for the deployed systems
  • Travelled to 5-10 sites for maintenance, installation supervision and commissioning (normally 1-5 days per system, up to 2 week in exceptional cases)
  • Provided feedback to continuously improve the system design standard for PowerTec’s PowerCache® and PaDECS® products

The opportunity:

A new opportunity exists for an Industrial Electrician - Energy Storage Systems Manufacturing  

The Candidate Will Have:

  • An A-licence as an Electrician or a Certificate III in Electrotechnology
  • Relevant professional experience in the installation or manufacturing of:
    • Industrial or commercial switchboard wiring (with primary electrical and secondary (control, protection, and communication) components
    • Interpreting detailed electrical LV power distribution and control design drawings
    • Electrical kiosk, cabinet, or switchboard mechanical, auxiliary and safety systems (cooling, fire suppression, E-Stop, etc.)
  • Ideally, you already have had exposure to:
    • DC systems (C&I-scale or utility-scale battery or solar) systems
    • Any of VVF drives, inverters, multi-function protection relays or PLCs
    • A past similar role within the Energy/Electrical Utility, renewables or power generation sector in Australia
  • Understanding control wiring principles and relay logic
  • A firm knowledge of AS3000 and the other relevant Australian standards
  • Experience in commissioning, electrical field services, and maintenance
  • A pragmatic approach with a strong ability to problem-solve independently
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work to challenging deadlines with a small team from different professional and diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Professional verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Confidence in working independently with customer technical staff

-      Fitted-out and wired cabinets with the power electrical, protection, power control, alarming, safety, auxiliary system, and environmental control components and circuits of a customised power conversion and battery energy storage system, based on a set of detailed functional and manufacturing drawings -     Analysed and marked up to functional and manufacturing drawings where changes are needed -      Developed an Integrated Test Plan and factory-tested power-electrical, control, communication, protection and auxiliary sub-systems of an energy storage system for function, safety, and failure scenarios -      Supervised or managed the installation of Energy Storage System cabinets on sites -      Optionally: programmed environmental and safety controls
  • Undertaken and documented site-specific system hardware variations
  • Contributed to improving the electrical system design standard for PowerTec’s PowerCache® product
  • Travelled to 1-3 sites for maintenance, installation supervision and commissioning (normally 1-5 days per system)
  • Ideally – expanded your role as project delivery manager or installation supervisor
